Hi everybody, I am Ray from China, your friend. I have been in Wellington for four months and I am a student at Wellington High. When I first arrived here, I felt everything was new in my life. There were so many differences compared with China.
At school the teachers were friendly, they gave me a lot of information about the school. I chose subjects which I like especially Outdoor Education which was funny and exciting. By the way in this class I knew someone. They were patient, told me the rules of the game and encouraged me. I tried some new things I hadn’t done in China. I like my class and my teachers.
The school gave me a wonderful homestay. They are so funny and kind. On the first day I came to the new homestay they told me that if I wanted anything I could just help myself. They said, “Ray, remember this is your home, you can do things just like you would at your home in China.” I am so happy that I met them. I’m 63kg now, fatter than four months ago by about 5 kgs!
Next year I will be in Year 12. For the last four months I have tried my best to get to know and make friends with local students. Of course it isn’t easy but everything comes to he who waits. I know Mo, Cody, Tom and Harry already, they helped me with my English and are friendly and accommodating. Finally I enjoy my new life in New Zealand. I hope my English will be as good as my Chinese, haha!
(Ray is on the left in this picture with his friend Binny – read Binny’s story too!)
My name is Binny, I am from China and I’m a student at Wellington High School. I have been in New Zealand about a year and I have studied at Wellington High for two terms. I’ve really enjoyed life here.
School here is very different from China. I can choose subjects I am interested in so classes are more fun and interesting. There isn’t too much homework or too many assessments – it is easier to study here and I can study many things.
My English has also improved in these few months. I have made many friends at school. They are from different countries – they are friendly and help me a lot. They have told me many things about school. I am happy to be friends with them, it makes life much better.
My teachers are good as well. They take care of me because I am a new student. They always help me with anything I ask.
I live in a homestay with another Chinese student, his name is Ray. My homestay parents, Nu’u and Dinah are very kind to us. They are both good cooks and they cook nice food for us. If we don’t like something, they won’t cook it again. We go shopping and fishing together. I feel free at home, just like I do in my Chinese home. We are like a real family.
I still have one more year at Wellington High School, I am Year 13 next year. I love to study here, I enjoy life in New Zealand and Wellington High School.

When I first came to school, I felt everything was amazing in my mind. I like the school stairs because it is like climbing to a tree house! There were many differences compared with China. There were lots of subjects to choose, not like China where you have to learn certain subjects. Here you can choose any subject you like.
There are some subjects which I chose that I love a lot – Art and Food Technology. Everyday I enjoy those classes. I can make my own product, I can cook food I have never tried. I also like the teachers, they’re very friendly. They know we are international students, so they pay more attention and take more care of us.
There are lots of fun things to do after school, because the school has lots of sports you can choose to do, like rugby, football and basketball. For me, I chose something I’m interested in – fencing. I hadn’t learnt this in China, so I am a beginner. I enjoy my school life.
I live in a homestay, my homestay mum is very friendly to me. She takes care of my life at home. Everyday she cooks lovely food – we eat dinner together and we talk about the interesting things that happened that day.
I’m quite happy studying and living in New Zealand.
Hi, my name is Lorna and I’m from mainland China, specifically I come from a big city called Guangzhou which is down the bottom of mainland China.
I came to New Zealand mostly because I really like English instead of Chinese and I really want to study about other countries not just China.
So here I am, studying at Wellington High as a Year 13 student. Wellington High is a very cool school. I could see this from the first day I came here. It surely is very, very different from those schools I had been to in China. At Wellington High, students can wear whatever they want as long as they are suitable for a student, they can choose the subjects they like to have, and more importantly, they have the freedom to express themselves freely.
The school is lovely and fun. Why? Because at Wellington High, there are a lot of activities you can get involved such as sports, music etc. and lots of other stuff I had never done or seen before. I’ve been involved in lots of things this year. I’m playing volleyball and I’m in the school team, even though I don’t know how to play it properly but never mind, cause I’ll learn little by little. I’m also a school library assistant. I started to volunteer at the school library last year. It was a great experience for me. I learnt a lot like; how to issue items, how to shelve books, it’s definitely good for me, so I continue doing it. Outside school, I have another mission during the weekends – volunteer at Old St Paul’s. Every weekend I go to this stunning historical church and help sort out the visitors from around the world. Sometimes I even help set up weddings and funerals for people. I had never imagined myself doing this but I’m doing it and I’m very confident and proud of doing it.
Wellington is a place everyone would like, because it’s so peaceful and simple. It avoids the usual big cities’ problems such as crime, safety, pollution etc. Wellington is so pure, clean and tidy that makes you feel guilty if you drop rubbish on the streets. Wellingtonians mostly are nice people. I was impressed very much by this when I first came here. In school if I am stuck with something or have a problem, people around do their best to help me. They all seem very willing to help and they are quite helpful and patiently listen to me which makes me very easy and comfortable.
However, since this is my first time living in a way that is so different. I needed to learn about change around me and try to fit in this new world. Sometimes I still find hard it to do.
I am Adam. I am eighteen years old and I come from Zhuhai City in Guanagdong, China. I am studying a course so I can get university entrance at the end of this year. I am studying subjects that I am good at: Physics, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, Art, Painting, Economics, Chinese and ESOL. I am living in a home-stay with a New Zealand couple and their children in Lyall Bay which is near the airport and the beach. It is only 15 minutes from school. They are very friendly and good to me. They take me on trips with them. Last holidays we all travelled around the North Island. I especially liked the hot springs in Rotorua. I am happy to be a student at Wellington High School. There is a very good choice of subjects. I like the education system here because it is more like the university system and it is good preparation for university study. I find the people here very friendly and I have become more independent since I have been here. The town is safe and going out is no problem.
I am doing a university entrance course: Biology, which I particularly like, Physics, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, ESOL, Chinese and recreation for fun. I played tennis for a school team in the summer.
This year I am sharing a flat with other students. I enjoy that because it gives me a chance to be independent.
I like Wellington High School. The students are friendly, the environment is great to practice your English and the library is very modern with many books and the internet to find information.
Wellington is a small city and very quiet but that is good for me. I can concentrate on my study.
New Zealand is green and peaceful and has a good education system.
I spent one year, 2007, as a Year 13 student at Wellington High School. There were a great many differences between here and China. I really liked the way the teachers taught; that we did experiments in Physics, for example, because it definitely helped me to understand what I was doing and helped with my wider comprehension of the subject.
The use of computers in Mathematics was something new also, and it was a very good way to learn it.
I also like that we did not have to wear a uniform. Wellington High has really good facilities and I played both basketball and badminton on indoor courts. I appreciated the difference from home.
I was also able to make a whole lot of friends here from many different countries, and I had a great time living with a Kiwi family. I came to New Zealand with the aim of getting into a good English speaking University. I spent one year in Year 13 at Wellington High doing a university entrance course in Mathematics with Calculus, Mathematics with Statistics, Economics, Physics and English as a Second Language. I worked hard and achieved University Entrance.
This year I’m studying for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Victoria University.
