Wiebke Biehl - Geesthact

My highlights in New Zealand. I really thought about it to try and pick one or two highlights and I can’t! My whole time here was such a big success. I had a wonderful time. I felt lonely at the very beginning but now I think that’s just normal. After a while you get used to your host family and find some friends. I really enjoyed every single moment. I have a perfect relationship with my host family. I never thought I could love these people so much after half a year but I do! It will be so hard to say goodbye to them.

My trip with Marion to the South Island was definitely a big adventure for me. I never had to care about my own holiday before. It was the first time I had to book my buses, hostels and ferry by myself. I had to calculate my own money and time, but we did well and I had an awesome time. We were both amazed by the varied nature of New Zealand. Magnificent mountains covered in snow, waterfalls, big lakes and the rough west coast with its beautiful beaches. I have never seen so much beauty and variety on such a small island.

Of course, I really enjoyed my time at Wellington High School. In Germany, I can’t choose my subjects and I’m always under pressure, learning for tests, doing my homework and preparing reports, mostly for subjects I am not even interest in.

My time here was so different. I was really interested in my subjects. I didn’t mind working for it because I wanted to learn. I had a different relationship with my teachers too. If I found a teacher like Mr Steele in Germany I would be amazed about his casual relationships with his students but at Wellington High School this seems to be normal. Moreover, I met people from countries all over the world. I loved it so much because I am really interested in different countries and the way of life there. I learned a lot about it and in such a different way than just reading a book about it. All together, I had the time of my life and had experiences that I won’t forget for my whole life.

I really want to thank Julia (Dean) for her help and support. She is such a warm hearted and friendly person. Stay how you are! I will miss my school, my friends, my host family and New Zealand so much, I am so grateful. Wiebke is 17 and spent the year studying journalism, english, , , in Yr 13.
